Best painting contractor software in 2026

The best painting contractor software depends on whether you mainly write estimates or also run crews and jobs. PaintScout ($119/mo) and Estimate Rocket ($139/mo for 3 users) are built specifically for painting estimating, Jobber and Housecall Pro are broader all-in-one apps, Joist ($10/mo) is the cheapest dedicated quote-and-invoice tool, and Claver includes 2, 8 or 20 users in one flat price from $19/mo.

Claver makes this page, and Claver is one of the options. Competitor prices come from each company's own pricing page, checked September 27, 2026.

What is the best software for a painting business?

No single app fits every painting contractor. Someone who spends their day writing estimates has different needs than a business also scheduling crews across multiple jobs. The table puts six options side by side on price, users and the real tradeoff.

Housecall Pro shows its prices after a short quiz about your trade and team size; the figures here are from its result for a one-person team. Jobber was running a limited-time discount when we checked, so the figures here are its regular rates. Prices change, so check the source before you buy.

How we compared these tools

We compared published prices, plan limits and features on each vendor's own site on September 27, 2026. We did not test the apps hands-on or survey their users, so nothing here ranks tools on ease of use or support. Where a company publishes no trial or price detail, we say so instead of guessing.

The six tools are ones painting contractors often weigh against each other, from painting-specific estimating tools to general field service apps. Each profile below uses the vendor's own plan names and descriptions. Claver's plan details come from Claver's own product.

What does each painting software option offer?

Each profile covers what the tool is, who it suits, what it costs and one real tradeoff. Every price is the vendor's own published figure.

Claver

Claver is field service software for small home-service businesses: scheduling, quotes, invoicing, payments and customer texting, with users included in one flat monthly price. Starter is $19/mo for 2 users, Crew $39/mo for 8 and Business $79/mo for 20, month-to-month. Starter includes online booking with live pricing, a customer portal, quotes, invoicing, card payments and recurring plans that customers can sign up for on their own. Crew adds dispatch, two-way texting, GPS tracking, route optimization and QuickBooks Online sync. Business adds a built-in phone system and an AI receptionist.

Tradeoff: Native iOS and Android apps and Tap to Pay are coming soon; today Claver is a web app you install from the browser. It is a newer product with a smaller integration list than Jobber or Housecall Pro, and there is no free plan: it is $1 for 14 days, then $19/mo. The AI receptionist is on Business only, and it takes booking requests for you to confirm rather than booking on its own.

Jobber

Jobber is an all-in-one app for home service pros to book, quote, invoice and grow, with plans from one user up to teams. Core is $49/mo for one user month-to-month, or $29/mo billed annually. Team plans are priced by team size: Connect for up to 5 users is $199/mo ($149/mo billed annually). Online booking and a client hub are on every plan, it has native iOS and Android apps, and you can try it free without a card.

Tradeoff: Many features sit above Core. GPS tracking, routing, automated client notifications and QuickBooks Online sync start on Connect, and two-way texting and job costing start on Grow. The AI Receptionist is a $29/mo add-on.

Housecall Pro

Housecall Pro is an all-in-one platform for residential and commercial pros. Its pricing page runs you through a quiz about your trade and team size before showing prices; for a one-person team it lists Basic at $79/mo, with online booking, scheduling and dispatch, estimates and invoicing. Essentials ($229/mo for one user) adds job costing, membership plans and QuickBooks Online sync, and Max ($349/mo) adds route optimization. It has a free mobile app for iOS and Android and a 14-day free trial with no card.

Tradeoff: Team plans start at $299/mo for 5 users on Essentials, and each extra user adds $100/mo. Max for teams is $649/mo for 8 users, plus $75/mo per extra user. AI call answering is a separate add-on.

PaintScout

PaintScout is estimating-first software built specifically for painting contractors. The Sales plan is $119/mo ($99/mo billed annually) per seat and covers production-rate estimating, interactive proposals with e-signature and Wisetack financing. An Operations add-on ($99/mo flat, $79/mo billed annually) adds scheduling, job and customer management and a drag-and-drop pipeline, plus $20/mo for each additional team seat.

Tradeoff: PaintScout's pricing page states no free trial length; it is demo-gated with "Get Started" and "Book a Demo" as the only CTAs. Running both the Sales seat and Operations add-on brings the entry cost to $218/mo before any extra seats.

Estimate Rocket

Estimate Rocket bundles the full platform (estimating, scheduling, job tracking, invoicing, reporting) into three flat plans by user count: Launch is $139/mo for 3 users, Accelerate $259/mo for 7 users and Expand $359/mo for 15 users. Every plan includes the same feature set. It offers a 90-day money-back guarantee instead of a stated free-trial length.

Tradeoff: There is no annual billing option on this page, and the cost of adding a user beyond your plan's included count drops steeply by tier ($79/mo extra on Launch versus $19/mo extra on Expand), so a growing team on Launch pays more per added person than one already on a higher plan.

Joist

Joist is built around estimates and invoices for individual contractors. Basics is $10/mo for up to 5 documents a month; Pro ($17/mo) adds unlimited documents and clients; Elite ($32/mo) adds license and insurance display, change orders and business reporting; Run ($100/mo, introductory pricing) adds job scheduling and linking jobs to estimates. Every tier has a 14-day free trial with no card.

Tradeoff: Joist is not painting-specific and has no production-rate estimating built in. Multi-person scheduling only shows up on the $100/mo Run plan, and there is no per-user pricing since it is designed around a single contractor's documents and clients.

Which painting contractor software should you choose?

Choose based on whether painting-specific estimating math is worth paying more for, or whether a general quoting and scheduling tool covers what you need. Price by what slows you down today, not by the most feature-heavy app on the list.

  • Solo, quotes and invoices only. Joist Basics ($10/mo, 5 documents a month) covers fast on-site estimates without painting-specific math or scheduling you don't use yet.
  • Solo, want painting-specific estimating. PaintScout's Sales seat ($119/mo) is built around production-rate estimating and interactive proposals for painting contractors specifically.
  • Solo or small crew, want scheduling too. Claver Starter ($19/mo, 2 users) and Jobber Core ($49/mo, or $29/mo billed annually) add booking and a customer portal at a lower price than PaintScout's combined Sales-plus-Operations bundle.
  • Crew of 3 to 7, one flat platform price. Estimate Rocket Launch ($139/mo, 3 users) or Accelerate ($259/mo, 7 users) bundle the full feature set at every tier, so there is no add-on to negotiate.
  • Growing crew, 5 to 20 people. Claver Business is $79/mo for 20 users. Jobber Connect for up to 5 users is $199/mo ($149/mo billed annually), and Housecall Pro Essentials for 5 is $299/mo.

What should a painting business look for in software?

Painting estimates depend on square footage, coverage rates and paint cost, so the right tool should make that math fast, whether it is a built-in feature or something you set up yourself.

  • Production-rate estimating. Tools built for painting contractors calculate labor and material cost from coverage rates and square footage. General tools require you to build your own price book or line items for this.
  • How it charges for users. Some tools price by user or team size (Jobber, Housecall Pro, PaintScout), some include a set number of users in each plan (Claver, Estimate Rocket), and Joist has no per-user pricing at all. Price your crew as it will be a year from now.
  • Proposals and e-signature. A painting estimate is often the whole sales pitch. Check whether proposals look professional and whether customers can approve and sign online.
  • Whether scheduling is bundled or an add-on. PaintScout separates estimating (Sales) from scheduling (Operations) and charges for each. Decide whether you need both before comparing total cost.
  • Trial length and signup friction. Some tools let you start online today; others, like PaintScout, are demo-gated with no stated trial length. Factor in how long it takes before you can start using a tool.
  • Getting your data out. Make sure you can export customers, jobs and invoices as CSV files if you switch tools later. Our guide on how to switch field service software walks through the move.

Painting contractor software FAQ

What is the best software for a painting business?
It depends on whether you mainly write estimates or also run crews and jobs. PaintScout and Estimate Rocket are built specifically for painting contractor estimating. Joist covers estimates and invoices for a solo contractor at a low price. Jobber and Housecall Pro are broader all-in-one apps. Claver includes 2, 8 or 20 users in one flat price starting at $19/mo. Match the tool to whether you need painting-specific estimating math or general job management.
Is there free software for painting contractors?
None of the six tools in this guide has a genuine free plan. All offer a free trial instead: 14 days for Housecall Pro, Joist and Claver's own $1 trial. PaintScout does not state a trial on its pricing page and gates signup behind a demo. Estimate Rocket instead offers a 90-day money-back guarantee rather than a trial. Budget for a paid plan from day one in this category.
How much does painting contractor software cost?
Entry prices range from $10/mo (Joist Basics) to $119/mo (PaintScout's Sales seat), or $218/mo with PaintScout's Operations add-on. Claver starts at $19/mo, Jobber Core is $49/mo ($29/mo billed annually), Housecall Pro Basic is $79/mo, and Estimate Rocket's Launch plan is $139/mo for 3 users. PaintScout prices in two pieces: a $119/mo Sales seat plus a $99/mo Operations add-on for scheduling and job management.
What is the best painting estimate software?
PaintScout is built specifically around production-rate estimating for painting contractors, with interactive proposals and e-signature. Estimate Rocket bundles estimating with scheduling and job costing for teams of 3 or more. Joist is the cheapest dedicated estimate-and-invoice tool at $10/mo, though it is not painting-specific. Pick a painting-specific tool if your estimates depend on production rates and coverage math; pick a general tool if price matters more.
Do I need painting-specific software, or will general field service software work?
PaintScout is the only tool here built specifically for painting contractors, with production-rate estimating built in. Estimate Rocket, Jobber, Housecall Pro, Joist and Claver are general contractor or field service tools that painting businesses use successfully, but you build your own pricing and material formulas rather than using painting-specific presets.
Which painting contractor software doesn't charge per user?
Claver includes 2, 8 or 20 users in flat plans of $19, $39 and $79 a month. Estimate Rocket bundles 3, 7 or 15 users per plan before extra-user fees kick in. Joist has no per-user pricing since it is built around one contractor's documents. PaintScout prices per seat and Jobber by team size, and Housecall Pro adds $75 to $100 per extra user on its team plans.
Is PaintScout worth it for a small painting business?
PaintScout costs $119/mo for the Sales seat alone, or $218/mo with the Operations add-on for scheduling, more than Jobber, Housecall Pro, Joist or Claver. It is worth it if production-rate estimating and painting-specific proposals are what slow you down today. If you mainly need quotes, scheduling and invoicing without painting-specific estimating math, a cheaper general tool covers the same ground for less.
How do I switch painting software without losing my customer list?
Export your customers, jobs, estimates and invoices as CSV files from your current tool before you cancel. Import them into the new tool and run both side by side until open jobs and invoices are settled. Check your contract for a minimum term first, since some estimating tools require a demo call to leave. Claver's import wizard reads CSV exports from Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan and QuickBooks.
