Best invoicing and estimate apps for contractors (2026)

The best invoicing app for a contractor depends on how much of the job it needs to run. Invoice Simple, Invoice2go and Square Invoices are the lowest-cost ways to send estimates and invoices, and Square has a free plan, but they are built for billing, not for scheduling or dispatch. Joist adds scheduling on its Run plan, and Jobber and Claver bill from the same app that books the work.

Claver makes this page, and Claver is one of the options. Competitor prices come from each company's own pricing page, checked September 27, 2026.

What is the best invoicing app for contractors?

A standalone invoicing app is the cheapest choice if you do the work yourself and only need to bill for it. Once you schedule a crew or book jobs online, an app that quotes, schedules and invoices in one place saves retyping. The table puts seven options side by side.

Last verified September 27, 2026 from each company's public pricing page: Invoice Simple, Invoice2go, Joist, Square Invoices, QuickBooks Online and Jobber. QuickBooks Online and Jobber were running limited-time discounts when we checked, so the figures here are their regular rates. Prices change, so check the source before you buy.

Do contractors need an invoicing app or field service software?

An invoicing app sends estimates, invoices and payment links, and it is the cheapest way to bill like a real business. Field service software does the same, but the invoice is built from a job that was already booked, scheduled and done in the same app. If you work alone and keep the schedule in your head, an invoicing app may be all you need.

  • An invoicing app (Invoice Simple, Invoice2go, Square Invoices) fits a solo contractor who quotes on site, does the work and bills the same day. Plans start under $10 a month, and Square has a free one.
  • Accounting software (QuickBooks Online) fits an owner who wants invoices to land straight in the books and has an accountant working from the same file.
  • A field service app (Jobber, Claver, and Joist on its Run plan) fits once you juggle more jobs than you can remember, send a crew, or take online bookings. The quote, the visit, the invoice and the payment all sit on one customer record.

How many invoices can you send on each plan?

The cheapest invoicing plans cap how many invoices you can send each month, and card fees often drop as you move up. The table shows the limits and fees each vendor publishes for its standalone invoicing plans.

How we compared these tools

We compared published prices, plan limits and features on each vendor's own site on September 27, 2026. We did not test the apps hands-on or survey their users, so nothing here ranks tools on ease of use or support. Where a vendor doesn't publish a figure, the table says so.

The seven tools are the invoicing apps, accounting software and field service apps contractors most often weigh for billing. Each profile uses the vendor's own plan names and descriptions. Claver's plan details come from Claver's own product.

What does each invoicing app offer?

Each profile covers what the tool is, who it suits, what it costs and one real tradeoff. Every price is the vendor's own published figure, with promotions marked where the vendor was running one.

Claver

Claver is field service software for small home-service businesses: scheduling, quotes, invoicing, payments and customer texting, with users included in one flat monthly price. Starter ($19/mo, 2 users) covers quotes and invoices with optional add-on line items, quote expiration dates, card payments through Stripe online and in the field, a deposit or full payment at booking, several cards on file, tips on the payment screen, automatic sales tax by job address, Wisetack consumer financing and recurring plans that bill themselves. Customers approve quotes and pay invoices in a portal with no login. Crew ($39/mo, 8 users) adds digital signatures on quotes, good-better-best proposals, change orders the customer approves, progress invoicing by milestone, batch invoicing, account statements, card surcharge pass-through and QuickBooks Online sync. Business ($79/mo, 20 users) adds AR aging alerts.

Tradeoff: Tap to Pay and native iOS and Android apps are coming soon; today Claver is a web app you install from the browser. If you only send a few invoices a month and schedule nothing, Square Free, Invoice Simple or Invoice2go costs less. It is a newer product with a smaller integration list than Jobber, and there is no free plan: it is $1 for 14 days, then $19/mo. The phone system and AI receptionist are on Business only, and the AI receptionist takes booking requests for you to confirm rather than booking on its own.

Jobber

Jobber is an all-in-one app for home service pros to book jobs, quote, invoice and grow. Core is $49/mo for one user ($29/mo billed annually), with online booking and a client hub. Connect adds QuickBooks Online and Xero sync and automated client notifications, at $199/mo for up to 5 users ($149/mo billed annually). It has native iOS and Android apps, and you can try it free without a card.

Tradeoff: Core has no QuickBooks sync, and optional add-ons and markups on quotes and job costing start on Grow, which is $299/mo for up to 5 users ($229/mo billed annually).

Invoice Simple

Invoice Simple is a mobile-first invoicing app for solo business owners, priced by how many invoices you send. Essentials is $6.99/mo for 3 invoices a month, Plus is $14.99/mo for 10 a month and adds photos, your signature, summary reports and due-date reminders, and Premium is $21.99/mo for unlimited invoices with client signatures and deposits. Billed annually, the three plans are $69.99, $149.99 and $219.99 a year. The mobile app has a 14-day free trial of Premium.

Tradeoff: It is built for billing, not running jobs, and its plans list no scheduling or dispatch. The caps on Essentials and Plus are tight for a busy week.

Invoice2go

Invoice2go pairs invoicing with a built-in business bank account and Visa debit card. Starter is $7.99/mo for 2 invoices a month, Professional is $11.99/mo for 5 a month and adds QuickBooks and Xero integration and advanced reports, and Premium is $44.99/mo for unlimited invoices, recurring invoices and phone support. Annual billing is $79.99, $119.99 or $449.99 a year. Every plan includes unlimited estimates, clients and team members and free ACH bank transfers, with no setup fee.

Tradeoff: Anyone sending more than 5 invoices a month on monthly billing needs Premium at $44.99/mo. Card fees are 3.5% on Starter, 3.0% on Professional and 2.9% on Premium, and the 30-day trial needs a card.

Joist

Joist is an estimate-to-payment app for individual contractors. Basics is $10/mo for up to 5 documents a month, Pro is $17/mo for unlimited documents and clients with work orders, and Elite is $32/mo (an introductory price when we checked) and adds change orders, business and sales reports and QuickBooks sync. The newest plan, Run, adds job organizing, visit scheduling and links between jobs, estimates and invoices, at $100/mo list or $70/mo on promotion. Customers can pay by card, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with Tap to Pay in person, and Joist offers homeowner financing up to $100,000. It has a 14-day free trial with no card.

Tradeoff: Scheduling is only on Run, the most expensive plan, and its lower price was a promotion. Plans are built around one contractor rather than a crew, and the AI Receptionist is a $49/mo add-on.

Square Invoices

Square includes invoicing in each of its general, per-location plans rather than selling it on its own. Square Free ($0/mo per location) has invoices and recurring invoices, estimates and contracts, and projects, and you pay only processing fees: 2.6% + 15¢ in person and 3.3% + 30¢ online. Square Plus ($49/mo per location) adds payment schedules, custom invoice templates, a $10 cap for ACH bank transfers and lower fees. Square Premium ($149/mo per location) has the lowest fees and 24/7 phone support. Plus and Premium have 30-day free trials.

Tradeoff: The paid plans cover all of Square and are priced per location, so you pay for its whole business plan to get more invoicing features. Its invoicing pricing page lists no job scheduling or dispatch.

QuickBooks Online

QuickBooks Online is accounting software: automated bookkeeping, expense categorizing, accountant access and reports. Simple Start is $38/mo for one user, Essentials $85/mo for 3, Plus $140/mo for 5 with inventory, purchase orders and project profitability, and Advanced $340/mo for 25 with batch invoices and workflow automation. When we checked, the pricing page offered 50% off for the first 3 months ($19, $42.50, $70 and $170 a month). It has a 30-day free trial.

Tradeoff: It is built for the books, not the field, so online booking, scheduling and dispatch come from a separate app. Jobber syncs with it from Connect, Housecall Pro from Essentials and Claver from Crew.

Which invoicing app should a contractor choose?

Choose by how many invoices you send and whether you also need to schedule the work. A solo contractor billing a few jobs a month can pay nothing or under $10. Once you send invoices every day or run a crew, compare the plan with unlimited invoices against a field service app that also books and schedules.

  • A few invoices a month. Square Free costs nothing but card fees. Invoice Simple Essentials ($6.99/mo) allows 3 invoices a month, Invoice2go Starter ($7.99/mo) 2, and Joist Basics ($10/mo) 5 documents.
  • A solo contractor billing every week. Joist Pro ($17/mo) and Invoice Simple Premium ($21.99/mo) have no invoice cap. Claver Starter ($19/mo, 2 users) also adds scheduling, online booking and recurring plans.
  • A crew with a schedule to run. Claver Crew is $39/mo for 8 users with dispatch, e-signatures and progress invoicing. Jobber Connect is $199/mo for up to 5 users ($149/mo billed annually).
  • Big jobs paid in stages. Look for deposits, change orders and milestone billing: Claver has progress invoicing on Crew, Square Plus has payment schedules, and Joist Elite has change orders.
  • Books first. If your accountant lives in QuickBooks Online, invoice from it or from a field service app that syncs with it.

For total cost across tools, see our field service software pricing guide and the Jobber vs QuickBooks comparison.

What should a contractor look for in an invoicing app?

Look past the entry price to the invoice cap, the card fees and whether estimates turn into invoices in one step. Then check deposits and milestone payments for bigger jobs, QuickBooks sync, and whether the app can schedule the work too.

  • Invoice caps. Several cheap plans allow 2 to 10 invoices a month. Count a busy month, not a slow one.
  • Card fees. A lower fee on a higher plan can pay for itself on big invoices. Some apps also let you pass the card fee to the customer where state law allows.
  • Estimate to invoice in one step. An approved estimate should become the invoice without retyping, ideally with the customer's signature on file.
  • Deposits and milestone payments. For jobs over a few thousand dollars, collect a deposit and bill in stages.
  • Recurring invoices. Maintenance customers should be billed on a schedule automatically.
  • QuickBooks sync. Check which plan includes it, so payments land in the books without double entry.
  • Scheduling. If you'll need to book and dispatch jobs within a year, starting in an app that does both saves a switch later.

What is the best invoicing app for contractors?
For a solo contractor who only needs to bill, Invoice Simple, Invoice2go, Joist and Square Invoices are the low-cost choices, and Square has a free plan. Most others offer trials instead: 14 days on Joist and on Invoice Simple's mobile app, and 30 days on Invoice2go (card required) and QuickBooks Online. Claver has no free plan: it is $1 for 14 days, then $19/mo.
Which app does both estimates and invoices?
Invoice Simple, Invoice2go, Joist, Square Invoices, Jobber and Claver all send estimates or quotes as well as invoices, and Invoice2go includes unlimited estimates on every plan. Jobber and Claver go further: the approved quote becomes a scheduled job and then the invoice, and Claver adds customer signatures on quotes from its Crew plan ($39/mo for 8 users).
Should I use QuickBooks or an invoicing app?
Use QuickBooks Online if you want invoices, expenses and taxes in one set of books your accountant can open. It starts at $38/mo at its regular price. A standalone invoicing app costs less and is quicker on a phone at the job site. You can also do both: invoice from a field service app and sync payments into QuickBooks Online. Jobber syncs from Connect and Claver from Crew.
Is Jobber better than Joist?
They suit different contractors. Joist is built for one contractor who writes estimates and invoices on site, from $10/mo, with scheduling only on its Run plan ($100/mo list, $70/mo on promotion when we checked). Jobber is built to run a whole service business, with online booking on every plan and team plans priced by team size, from $49/mo for one user. Joist's plans are built around one contractor, while Jobber's team plans add users.
Is Square Invoices really free?
Square Free has no subscription fee, and it includes invoices, recurring invoices, estimates, contracts and projects. You pay a processing fee each time a customer pays: 2.6% + 15¢ in person and 3.3% + 30¢ online. Square Plus ($49/mo per location) lowers the online fee to 2.9% + 30¢ and adds payment schedules and custom invoice templates.
Can an invoicing app schedule jobs too?
Most standalone invoicing apps don't list scheduling on their plans. Joist adds job organizing and visit scheduling on its Run plan. Field service apps do both: Claver Starter ($19/mo, 2 users) includes scheduling, online booking with live pricing, quotes and invoices, and Jobber includes online booking from Core. For a crew, compare the plan with a dispatch board and GPS.
