How gross weekly pay breaks down

Gross pay is two buckets added together: the hours at the regular rate, plus the hours over the threshold at time-and-a-half. Get those two right and the total takes care of itself.

Regular pay

hours up to 40 × rate

Every hour up to the weekly threshold is paid at the tech's normal rate. At $25 an hour, a full 40-hour week is $1,000 in regular pay before any overtime.

Overtime pay

hours over 40 × rate × 1.5

Hours past the threshold are paid at 1.5x the rate. At $25 an hour, that's $37.50 per overtime hour — six overtime hours adds $225 on top of the regular $1,000.

This calculator handles gross pay only — what the tech earned before withholding. It does not take out federal or state tax, Social Security, or Medicare, and it doesn't cut a check. Hand the gross to your payroll provider for net pay and the filings.

Payroll calculator — FAQ

How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for every hour worked over the weekly threshold, which is 40 hours under federal law. This calculator splits the week for you: hours up to the threshold are paid at the regular rate, and hours above it are paid at 1.5x. For example, at $25 an hour, a 46-hour week is 40 regular hours ($1,000) plus 6 overtime hours at $37.50 ($225), for $1,225 gross. You can change the threshold if your state or union rules differ.
Does this payroll calculator take out taxes?
No. This tool computes gross weekly pay only: regular pay, overtime pay, and the total before any deductions. It does not withhold federal or state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, or anything else, and it does not file or pay taxes. Use the gross figure as the starting point you hand to your payroll provider, who calculates net pay and handles the filings.
What counts as a 40-hour week for overtime?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime kicks in after 40 hours worked in a single workweek for non-exempt hourly employees. A few states add daily overtime rules or a different weekly threshold, so the calculator lets you change the overtime threshold to match your situation. When in doubt about whether a worker is exempt or which rule applies, check with your accountant or your state labor department.
Does Claver run payroll math automatically?
Claver does the gross math for you on the Crew plan. Techs clock in and out on jobs from the mobile app, those hours run through timesheet approval with your overtime rules, and the Payroll Calculator screen shows gross pay, regular versus overtime hours, and job count for every tech, ready before you run payroll. You read the totals and hand them to your payroll provider, or export them on the Business plan. Claver does not withhold taxes or cut checks.
